Percentage of children 6-12 years of age and newly prescribed a medication for attention- deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who had appropriate follow-up care. Two rates are reported:
- Percentage of children who had one follow-up visit with a practitioner with prescribing authority during the 30-Day Initiation Phase.
- Percentage of children who remained on ADHD medication for at least 210 treatment days and who, in addition to the visit in the Initiation Phase, had at least two additional follow-up visits with a practitioner within 270 days (9 months) after the Initiation Phase ended.
Definitions
- Initiation Phase: The 30 days following the IPSD.
- Continuation and Maintenance Phase: Starts after the Initiation Phase. It is the 31–300 days following the IPSD (9 months).
- Index Prescription Start Date (IPSD): The earliest prescription dispensing date for an ADHD medication where
- The date is in the 12-month window starting March 1 of the year prior to the measurement year and ending February 28 of the measurement year (intake period)
- There is a period of 120 days (4 months) prior to the IPSD, during which time the member had no ADHD medications dispensed for either new or refill prescriptions (negative prescription)

Numerator #1
Patients who had at least one face-to-face visit with a practitioner with prescribing authority within during the initiation phase
Numerator #2
Patients who had at least one face-to-face visit with a practitioner with prescribing authority during the Initiation Phase, and at least two follow-up visits on different dates of servie during the Continuation and Maintenance Phase. One of the two visits during the 31-300 days after the IPSD.

Denominator #1
Children 6-12 years of age as of the intake period who had an IPSD and who had a visit within 6 months prior to the IPSD including the IPSD.
Children are removed if they had an inpatient stay with a principal diagnosis of mental, behavioral, or neurodevelopmental disorder during the initiation Phase.
Denominator #2
Children 6-12 years of age of the intake period who had an IPSD and remained on the medication for at least 210 treatment days during the 301=day period beginning on the IPSD though 300 days after the IPSD, and who had a visit within 6 months prior to the IPSD including the IPSD.
Children are removed if they had an inpatient stay with a principal diagnosis of mental, behavioral, or neurodevelopmental disorder during the initiation Phase.
Denominator Exclusions for Denominator #1 and #2
Patients who otherwise meet the denominator will be excluded if they meet any of the three criteria below:
- Any diagnosis of narcolepsy: Exclude patients diagnosed with narcolepsy at any point in their history or during the measurement period.
- Exclude patients whose hospice or palliative care overlaps the measurement period:
- Identified in the patient's Alerts and Directives, located in the demographic screen or the Summary Sheet, in the name, text or comments saved with that alert/directive. The Alert/Directive should include either of the following phrases:
- palliative
- hospice
