How to Add NPI and DEA Numbers to Prescriptions

Amazing Charts already stores each provider's NPI and DEA numbers, but it doesn't print them on prescriptions unless you ask it to. Whether they appear is controlled by two checkboxes in Set Prescription Format.

This is a practice-wide setting. Turning it on changes prescriptions for everyone in the practice, not just the person who made the change, and you only need to do it once.

This setting controls printed prescriptions. Electronically transmitted prescriptions handle NPI and DEA separately, so this change won't affect those.

Step by step

1

Open Administrator Options

From the top menu bar, click View, then Administrator Options. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl + A.

The View menu in Amazing Charts, expanded, with Administrator Options highlighted at the top of the list
2

Click Set Prescription Format

Look for the Practice-Wide Preferences group of icons and click Set Prescription Format. It's in the top row, fourth from the left — the icon with the small red cross on a page.

3

Check Include NPI and Include DEA

Near the top of the screen is a block of checkboxes. Check Include NPI in the left column, Include DEA in the right column, or both, depending on what your prescriptions need.

Check only what you actually need. Every extra line takes up room on the prescription, and long provider or practice names can push the layout out of alignment.
4

Click Save Prescription Preferences

The Save Prescription Preferences button sits below the options. Your change isn't stored until you click it.

Closing the window without clicking Save Prescription Preferences discards the change. The checkboxes will be back to how they were the next time you open the screen.

Checking your work

Print a sample prescription and look at it before your next patient does. The provider's NPI and DEA should appear alongside their name. If the practice has several providers, check one with a long name too — that's where alignment problems show up first.

If something doesn't look right

What you're seeingWhat to try
No Administrator Options in the View menu Your login doesn't have administrator rights. Ask whoever manages Amazing Charts at your practice to make the change, or to grant you access.
The box is checked, but nothing prints The checkbox only says print it if we have it. If that provider's NPI or DEA is blank on their own user record, there is nothing for Amazing Charts to print. Fill it in there first.
Numbers print, but the layout is off Use Additional Script Alignment Adjustments on the same screen to nudge the text, then print another sample. Adjust a little at a time.
Include Supervisor DEA is greyed out That option belongs with mid-level prescriptions and stays unavailable until the supervisor setting above it is turned on. It's separate from the two boxes in this article.
The change didn't stick The screen was closed before Save Prescription Preferences was clicked. Set the boxes again and save.
It worked for you but not for a colleague This is a practice-wide setting, so it should apply to everyone. Have them close and reopen Amazing Charts, which reloads the preferences.
